THE INTERACTIVE EXPERIENCE

Depending on the time frame, the sessions can include the following interactive components:

First, in a prework exercise, participants select several performance plateaus to address in the seminar.  A plateau is a stuck point where skill proficiency is not improving or results are thwarted.  Often people know they need to act, but they just don’t do it (with sufficient frequency, quality of effort, or following an effective plan).  Result:  Plateaus are identified and described vividly.

Second, participants describe their own life experiences that demonstrate becoming “unrecognizable” comparing their baseline starting point and their eventual results.  They recognize their own capacity to overcame inevitable plateaus with what seemed  at the time like unreasonable effort.  Result:  The notion of a healthy disregard for the unreasonable becomes tangible.

Third, in a series of one-on-one coaching exchanges, Art demonstrates the master coaching orientation of maintaining “a healthy disregard for the unreasonable.” His coaching process has a systematic flow of questions and techniques that enable individuals to reveal the truth about the self-induced nature of their performance plateau.  With each coaching conversation, everyone notices that once valid obstacles to performance are merely imagined perceptions of difficulty when viewed with a healthy disregard for the unreasonable.    Result:  Self-managements skills improve.

Fourth, in pairs, participants practice coaching methods with each other.  In debriefing the practice rounds, the reasons, justifications, and rationalizations people use to explain plateaus come to be treated as flimsy excuses—not only for an individual but for the entire organization. Result:  Coaching proficiency improves.

Followup coaching project. Through phone and e-mail coaching, Art empowers a team of coaches for time periods ranging from 3-12 months with weekly or biweekly contacts to refine the coaching skills and enable participants to master their performance plateaus.  Result:  The organizational culture adopts the unwavering principle of zero tolerance for blaming, and the norm of taking 100% accountability.
